Golden Kaleidoscope: 2013

Beyonce taught me.

"Girls love Beyonce"-Drake

Yes, I've fallen into the Beyonce trap. I am a huge supporter of everything she does. I'm not a Stan, just a regular fan.  When I was growing up Beyonce was one of the first public figures I saw that embraced her super curvy figure. I remember her giving an interview about people telling her to loose weight and instead of caving into the pressure and letting those words get to her, she wrote the song, "Bootylicous" (a favorite of mine.).   She let people know that curvy is always in and that her body is too awesome to change! Me and my girls would get together before the club, get dressed to the max; beat the hell out of our faces; take shots of vodka; and jam the hell outta Beyonce while getting ready and in the car.

Casual Steez

Just wanted to showcase more of my casual weekend style. As much as I love my tall heels and tight dresses, commuting in that all day in New York City, in the winter time would be a no go. On a normal day you'll catch me in jeans or leggings, graphic sweater and boots or sneakers. What is your casual weekend winter wear?

Winter Blues...

Blue Hues and Attitude

I'm a summer baby. If it were up to me I'd be in swimsuits and breezy maxi skirts all day long. This fall/winter has been a complete eye opener for me when it comes to fashion. I'm starting to love fun coats, wool hats, chunky boots and tube scarves. I guess the winter isn't all that bad.

ModCloth + Essie Golden= Fun Glam!

 A Star For The Night

I have always been a lover of all things  flirty, fun, sexy and feminine, no other website combines that better than ModCloth.  When they invited me to participate in the style challenge I honored and excited. I couldn't wait to create my own fun outfit. The outfit was centered around their When The Night Comes Nior lace dress. Not only is this dress affordable, but it is a staple  LBD piece to any woman's wardrobe that could be dressed up or down.  I was inspired by this dress to create, "A Star For The Night." outfit filled with a fancy hat, shimmery gold bold blazer, and classic black pumps. Nothing says glam and holidays like black and shimmery gold! This outfit will make you the star of the night and turn plenty of heads. Thank you ModCloth for contacting me to participate in this fun style challenge and Happy Holidays!

In the nude....

Nice and Naughty

Hello everyone! I know it's been a while since I've posted but I'm back and completely NUDE! Well, I'm wearing nude, that's almost the same thing, right? I've officially fallen in love with light colors! Being a clumsy and messy person at times, I shy away from colors that show the mess of whatever I've had for breakfast or lunch. After seeing this beautiful Nude Trench Coat on the Forever 21 site, I had to get it! I love that you can can wear this coat in so many different ways. I paired it with this matching zipper bag, also from Forever 21. It's sold out, but here is a similar bag in a different color, paired it with matching nude pumps from DSW (similar).

Nice

Match Maker!

Growing up my mother had me in matching sets all of the time. One day I went to school late in a matching set my mother forced me to wear, and was absolutely mortified when my P.E. teacher had on the same exact outfit. Things got worse when she yelled out, "Twins!" causing my entire fifth grade class to burst into laughter. Though years have passed, I must admit, I still have nightmares from that incident. This season with its matching sets in fun prints and colors has made me reconsider my stance. Check them out below!

Country girl...

In the big city.

I'm a southern woman to the core. I love my friend chicken (lol), heavy Chevy's and overly gaudy clothing pieces. I deliciously tacky style moments. I love wearing gaudy or overly bedazzled pieces with something simple. I have been on the search everywhere for a denim jumper and I haven't been able to find one in my size. When I saw Dawn from Kaleidoscope Femme Studio post this on her Instagram account I bought it without hesitation. Her website is FULL of awesome one of kind unique vintage pieces. To say I'm in love with it would be a understatement. I'm obsessed and head over heels in love with it. My obsession with vintage is growing. I love having a one of a kind pieces that helps me stand out from others. Not only is this jumper stylish but it is super comfortable. When you're traveling back and forth in the city comfort is a must.

Holiday....Celebrate!

The holiday season is quickly approaching, so will those fancy holiday parties. As most of you know, I love my graphic t's and bodycon dresses but, sometimes I like to be a grown up. During the holidays people will wear items that are a little more extravagant. Furs, pearls, high heeled boots and grandma's expensive jewelry are the go to items during this season. When you walk into these holiday parties you will want to stand out. I am a lover of jumpsuits, rompers (or onesies" as some of my male friends call them). This Monif C. jumpsuit will definitely make your presence known in the room. Not only is it super comfortable, but it is simply sexy and elegant.

Last Friday I was contacted by HLN to do a special blog piece on the teenager Shelby Buster who went into a Rue 21 store and was asked to leave because she was fat. Body shaming by retail employees is something I have dealt with my entire life. I have been asked rude questions and made to feel less than by employees who felt I was too fat to shop. Ladies, you do not have to be silent anymore, Those days are over! Your voice matters just as much as your dollars. When these clerks go out of their way to make you feel bad, hit them where it hurts. Address it with their managers immediately and if they do nothing; take Shelby's lead and voice your experience via social media.  Please check out my article at http://www.hlntv.com/article/2013/09/09/rue-21-teen-girl-told-she-too-fat-shop-op-ed and leave a comment on your experience. Thank you guys for helping me carry out this body positive movement. I love you!

I wanna be so dope that it offends people....

I want you to feel a little disrespected when you see me.

Check out Solestruck's blogpost about me!

Last Friday I was featured on Instagram by one of my favorite shoe brands Solestruck. To say I was excited would be an understatement. I was featured wearing my new favorite shoes the Carmelo by Jennifer Chou in Neon Yellow and Rue 107's Caged Lover Dress in shocking pink. My excitement died down for a second when people started to attack my size and shape. I typically experience some form of "bullying" on social media, so it bothered me but not enough to kill the moment. People who are stuck in that old fashioned box that you can't be big and stylish are the ones with the most to say. Trust, I'm here to teach them a few things. My excitement was turned to tears of joy when strangers and friends stood up to these cyber bullies. I was taken aback by people's nice, and thoughtful comments. Especially Solesturck's!

Goodbye to you....

"I'd take her if I had one wish, but she's been gone since that summer, since that summer"-LFO

The summer is officially over and to say it was epic would be an understatement. I had THE most amazing summer with the greatest group of women I have ever met. From the beaches in Miami to endless margaritas in Manhattan; I've really had the time of my life. So many women enjoyed the summer in their crop tops, swimsuits, long maxi skirts and shorts. I was truly inspired by everyone's summer fashion.

"This is the L-I-Y-A-H"

Let's face it, sometimes you don't want to wear a dress and high heels. Some days you wanna be "one of the guys". I was watching an old school Aaliyah music video and it inspired me. She had this sexy tomboy attitude about her. It wasn't overly masculine; it was perfect.Since the anniversary of her passing was a few days ago I decided to do an Aaliyah inspired outfit post. Her music, life, even style of dress affected my life so much that I attempted her signature over the eye hairstyle, and I wasn't able to see in class. I was cute though! Her life was tragically cut way too short but, at least we have her music and movies to carry on her legacy.

Strength, courage and wisdom...

"It was inside of me all along."- India Arie

With my birthday approaching next week, I'm so grateful for where my life is at this moment. I'm living in my dream city, I have an amazing support system and I'm making things happen for myself that I never thought were possible. My life hasn't always been easy. We all have a story and mine is no different from any other person who came from a broken home. My birth mother was a drug addict who didn't want to be a mother so she ran from her responsibilities. My earlier childhood was filled with abuse and multiple foster care homes. Being a child in the system, you meet people who really care about children and others who are in it for the paycheck.

Unapologetic (F*ck it!)

"A lot of people say that it's a lack of vocabulary that makes you swear. Rubbish. I know thousands of words but I still prefer "fuck". "-Billy Connolly

I wear what I want, when I want and how I want. I curse, I laugh loudly and I wear things that would make your grandmother blush. Does this make me a bad ass or "cool"? No. However, I don't let other people's opinions of life affect what I wear, do or say. I'm still going to rock long weaves, form fitting clothes and inappropriate t shirts. It's just who I am.
